We always discuss what we liked about certain books, but what if we don’t like particular books.
‘Books we read but didn’t like’ was the topic of discussion on 53rd Meetup organized by Jaipur book lovers at OVEN The Bakery, C scheme on 28th May. This was certainly one of the best event you should expect from the book lovers of a city like Jaipur. All the participants were very enthusiastic book lovers and turned up at the event with the list of the books they didn’t like and ready to barter with fellow participants. The unusual topic selected by the organizers in itself was sufficient enough for the participants break the ice & start the discussion on a very high note. Participants shared their views making categorically clear that why they just didn’t gel with the work of particular authors. Obviously, all had different reasons of not liking certain books, but what made the discussion more interesting that some participants were countered by the others because the book in discussion was not that bad from their point of view. An event where logic & counter logic enhanced the charm of the event, was a true delight for a vivid book reader.
For me, books are either sublime or ridiculous. What disappoints me most is a hopeless work from the authors who have exhibited the top class writing in their previous works. It’s like watching “ram gopal varma ki aag’ from a director who have created a magnificent piece of drama like ‘satya’ says Vivek , one of the participants & an intense reader.
How can you not like a book like ‘Siddhartha by Herman Hesse. I have read this book 7 times & even a film is also there based on this book, starring the great actor Shashi Kapoor , Says Ravi with a twinkle in his eyes when Manu tries to make his point why he didn’t like the book .
Rahul, one of the participants says that he did not like the way writer Stephen Covey tried to explain emotions & feelings through graphics & charts in his book ‘The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People ’. He couldnt relate to the fact that tools like graphics & charts which are generally used to demonstrate lifeless facts & figures can be used to explain feelings & emotions.
Santana, a very vivid reader made a point on the grammar usages of the writer ‘Hillary Mantel’ of ‘ Wolf Hall’ . She explained that while the writer is correct with usages of grammar, her style of writing keep on disconnecting the reader from the current paragraph he/ she is reading through.
The other participants who put their noteworthy points about the books they didn’t like & transformed the event into a highly cerebral & worth to attend were, Dr Sonal Kalia, Keshav, Ruchir, Ankit, Abhishek & Prateek.
Prashant from Jaipur book lovers told us that we have organized 53rd Meetup today . We organize these Meetups on every second & fourth Sunday for book lovers in Jaipur and we are adding up new members in our fan club almost on daily basis. What makes our concept very popular is that there is no fee for attending these Meetups organized by Jaipur book lovers & only condition to be part of this rapidly growing community is that you must have a special place for books in your heart.
